The objective is to develop a single crossword that covers all the star squares on the game board. The quest is to achieve this by playing the "minimum" number of words and using the minimum number of letter changes, repeat words and letter tile blanks.
Seven letter tiles are taken from the letter tile bag and placed on the letter tile rack. The first word is put down onto any one of the diamond square positions. The letter tiles are replenished back to seven and another word put down developing the crossword, in crossword style, until all the star squares are covered.
The challenge is to record a minimum points score. The score in points is equal to the number of words used plus additionally, one point added for each letter change taken, repeat word used and repeat use of a letter tile blank.
Letters can be changed at any time with those in the letter tile bag. Up to seven letters can be changed at any one time. Each time this occurs one point is added to the score.
There are three letter tile blanks. They can be used to represent any letter. Once specified and played, they can be retrieved given that the specified letter can be exchanged. For each subsequent use one point is added to the score.
1) As per normal crossword convention, letters played in one turn must be in a single straight line. This can either be vertically down or horizontally across the board. Complete words must always be formed.
2) With the exception of blanks, letters cannot be moved once played.
3) Letters must always be selected at random from the letter tile bag.
4) Only words quoted in a recognised dictionary can be used, with the exception of proper nouns, abbreviations, foreign words and those requiring hyphens and apostrophes.
